RIOCAN WINDFIELDS

Located in north Oshawa, ON, RioCan Windfields is a retail development totalling 839,000 sq. ft. that boasts retailers such as FreshCo, LCBO, Starbucks and TD. STUDIO tla provided landscape architectural services that delivered design elements that connect the site with the past while also looking towards the future.
 

The property—located on a former thoroughbred horse breeding farm that was the birthplace of the legendary Northern Dancer—inspired the design of retail site’s entrance ways, which feature metal, silhouette horse sculptures galloping or grazing in spaces resembling small meadows. In the northeast entrance, farm-style aluminum fencing and a family of horse sculptures also reflect the spirit of the former farm.
 

Inside the retail complex, rain gardens placed strategically throughout the interior parking lot, as well as long grasses, shrubs and small trees planted in islands and entrance ways, help to manage stormwater, reduce heat island effect and enhance aesthetics.
