Our mission was to completely transform an existing office building located in downtown Toronto into a visually attractive, maintenance-friendly and wheelchair accessible space where people could sit and relax, a space that would combine form, function and beauty. The client also requested a design that would discourage skateboarding and loitering outside the entrance. In addition, the design would need to accommodate the existing structural limitations, including steel supports that were located in areas that would make the landscaping element particularly challenging. The existing landscaping was removed, as the parking garage and roof slab were damaged. Our design incorporated angled planters that added a unique visual element, but simultaneously prevented people from congregating in areas that the client wanted to keep clear. The pre-existing water fountains were replaced with tall planters to accommodate new trees and overall flora, creating precisely the landscape design envisioned by the client.
