Metrogate is a new community located in Scarborough, Ontario. This project is a recent recipient of the LEED Neighbourhood Development Silver Award. The project components include six large residential towers, townhouses and a central park. STUDIO tla worked in close collaboration with the client and design team to integrate ecological initiatives into the landscape. These included special storm water facilities that replenish the local aquifers, a sustainable planting scheme and a sunken ravine with a bridge overlook. To reinforce the impression of community for the stakeholders, STUDIO tla designed a local square as a central focus. Additional facilities include playfields, a structured playground, a public art component and opportunities for informal gathering.
Each of the towers on the site has its own specific landscape vocabulary that responds to the theme of the building. The facilities on each tower’s roof is varied and includes putting greens, perennial gardens and outdoor human-scaled passive spaces. At grade, the landscape design provides for outdoor daycare playgrounds, plazas, sound attenuation green walls and landscape elements to create a grand sense of arrival that responds to the scale of the architecture. While each component of Metrogate is unique on its own, a common vocabulary of signage, lighting, planting and site furniture ties all of the site elements together resulting in a harmonious fusion of state-of-the-art urban design and best practices in environmental planning.
