Originally built in 1986, Promenade Mall is a suburban shopping centre in Vaughn, ON that is being revitalized into a master planned community designed to meet the pressing demands for additional housing and public realm in the GTA. The proposed multi-phased revitalization of the shopping centre and surface parking lots will involve 20 towers offering a mix of residential, office, and commercial spaces across the 95-acre property interspersed by public parks, Privately-Owned Public Accessible Spaces (POPS) plazas, private streets, public streets and retail mews.
The redevelopment is an opportunity for the community to create a place for growth that will evolve as a distinct urban centre. In our role as landscape architect and urban designer, we are collaborating with Liberty Development and a multi-disciplinary project team to transform the existing mall into a place for people to gather, socialize, shop, work, learn and live.
It will feature a network of complete streets for pedestrians, cyclists, transit users and motorists that provides easy access to rapid transit services. These streets will integrate with numerous parks, indoor and outdoor open spaces, and gathering places that will meet the needs of a multi-generational community through an overall design that promotes vibrancy, safety and accessibility.
These characteristics will create a strong sense of place that will connect new and existing members of the community and accommodate different activities and uses through a public realm that has been designed to be adaptable.
