Design Exchange Award, Honourable Mention, Landscape Architecture

STUDIO tla was commissioned to develop a landscape design to complement the massive new terminal project at Lester B. Pearson International Airport. This large-scale project presented the challenge of managing significant constraints associated with the harsh environment, which included highway traffic and construction, road salt and maintenance. STUDIO tla was able to meet the client’s needs by proposing salt-tolerant plant materials and implementing hard landscape elements that would lend visual impact, yet require little maintenance. The landscape was designed in a manner that intuitively created an awareness among approaching drivers to slow down as they entered the airport terminal area. STUDIO tla utilized mass planting techniques to maximize colour display and impact, while rock outcroppings helped to retain large slopes, create a pleasant visual image and encourage traffic awareness. The incorporation of a “no-mow” lawn reduces maintenance, while modern irrigation technology reduces water related expenditures. The successful execution of this $8.8 million project exhibits STUDIO tla’s acumen with large-scale landscape design projects, along with the firm’s ability to balance complex, competing needs.
