Phase 2 of Scholars Green Park was recently honoured in two categories at the Mississauga Urban Design Awards: an Award of Merit – given to projects that demonstrate excellence across all judging criteria – and Healthy by Design – given to projects that exemplify Healthy Community Design elements established by the City.

Awarded annually since 1981, the Mississauga Urban Design Awards ‘celebrate excellent and innovative urban design projects that transform’ the Mississauga community. This year’s awards—dubbed as ‘The Next Big Thing’– recognized seven projects in nine categories from a field of 24 submissions. We are particularly grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with gh3 during the design process of the project.

Scholars Green Park is a symbiosis of public park and academic common that provides rich outdoor amenities for students, faculty and the surrounding community. Formerly a parking lot in Mississauga’s City Centre precinct, the space has been transformed into a vibrant, urban park adjacent to the Sheridan College Mississauga Campus. Phase 1 of the project was completed several years ago.

The park centralizes several programmed spaces into the core of the City Centre, offering accessible, open space that feature pockets of dense tree planting to promote the City’s urban forest. Several environmentally sustainable features—such as permeable pavements, on-site stormwater management, LED light fixtures and native plantings–have been imbued in the park.

As Prime Consultants, STUDIO tla managed the significant construction budget and coordinated the comprehensive team effort for the delivery of the urban park. STUDIO tla assisted city staff and Sheridan College in preparing presentation and design plans, and with organizing and attending public information Sessions at the concept and final design stages with the Area Councillor and local residents.
